Uh Oh! Wake Up Call...
Today could spell long term trouble for President Obama and his party. The Dems managed to lose a long standing senate seat (a much needed seat to maintain a 60 vote filibuster proof majority) long held by Ted Kennedy for almost half a century. How did the Dems manage to screw up so badly? Voter turnout may be to blame but overconfidence proved to be the Achilles heel of the Democratic party this time around. A weak Democratic Party successor in Martha Coakley and a too little too late last minute President Obama campaign ultimately may thwart any hope for Health Care reform.
Follow up:
GOP candidate Scott Brown managed to edge out the win and will serve as the Massachusetts Senator until 2012. Along with the support of the vocal Tea "baggers" Party they managed to ride a wave of voter anger focused on the inability of the Obama administrator to make significant changes in the yet to be completed 1st year. This wave is giving the Obama administration great cause for concern since it could be a forecast of things to come. Having already lost 3 governors' seats in Virginia and New Jersey in November to Republicans, and now a crucial senate seat may spell an expanding PR hole that the Obama administration may not be able to dig out of. Support from fellow party members could weaken and deter other Dems from seeking office in November which would ultimately tie President Obamas hands for the rest of his term. Now is the time for the Obama administration to "course correct" and do some damage control. Will it happen? One thing is for sure. It is still way too early to count President Obama out yet.
